Saturday Spill

Posted: June 6, 2011 in Handicapping

Still thinking about Saturday night’s spill in the Prairie Meadows Mile that cost the life of a nice horse named Arcadian. Also very, very thankful that the four riders and three other horses involved in the spill escaped serious injury.

It was a violent, nasty, totally unexpected breakdown that took the wind out of everyone who saw it and it left us deeply shaken.

As always, incidents like this one bring up the age-old “horses love to run” v. “we force them to run” debate, which –to me– seems to boil down to an all-or-nothing proposition … if we want to prevent ALL breakdowns, it would mean ending competitive horse racing on every level.

What say you?
