Affirmed
This page is dedicated to the great Affirmed, the 1978 Triple Crown winner and the last horse to achieve thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious accomplishment … winning the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and The Belmont in three magical races over his determined rival Alydar.

In the 1978 Kentucky Derby, Affirmed (Steve Cauthen) faced eleven rivals: Alydar, Believe It, Darby Creek Road, Esops Foibles, Sensitive Prince, Dr. Valeri, Hoist the Silver, Chief of Dixieland, Raymond Earl, and Special Honor.

Two weeks later, only six challengers, including Kentucky Derby runner-up Alydar, showed up at Pimlico to test Affirmed. The others were: Believe It, Noon Time Spender, Indigo Star, Dax S., and Track Reward.

And, finally, three weeks after The Preakness, Affirmed faced only four rivals, Alydar, Darby Creek Road, Judge Advocate, and Noon Time Spender as he joined Secretariat and Seattle Slew as a Triple Crown winner of the 70s!
